SWHC MENS 1ST TEAM REPORT
On Saturday 21 May the Mens 1st team outplayed and outclassed Conberg beating them 10-1. Sommies dominated the game from start to finish with good passing hockey and lead 3 - nil at half time. In the second half Sommies stepped up the level to score their 4th goal in the 4 minute. The team then scored another 5 goals from general play. The score was on 9 nil when a lapse in concentration at the back allowed Conberg to score a conciliation goal. Flo Kleinert finished of the rout by the scoring the 10th goal in the 34th minute. Goal scorers were Grant Hawkins (capt) x 2; Rowan Watson x 1; Flo Kleinert x 1; Mark Kokoropo x 2; Mike Oosthuizen x 1 and Jovan du Plessis scored a hat trick of goals.
Men's M2 Side
Just made it!! Although we had more of the game we could not slot a goal. Hit the keeper square in the mask, etc etc. We were never under too much pressure, with the midfield managing to shut down their attacks and Dylan, Carl, Dave and Jason cleaned up any that sneaked through to the back. Somehow we never got that magic pass going in the D, although Mirko and Pickers were a handful for the defenders. Jannie and Tim also ran hard at the defenders all afternoon, keeping them under pressure. We managed to get shorties but could not put those away. Eventually it took a well timed “leave” from Pickers from a long corner for the ball to roll through to Mirko on the right post, who tapped in for yet another of ‘those’ goals that don’t need a backswing. Tight game!! Carl got man-of-the-match for a solid all round performance and Q got d-of-the-day for a late appearance.
Week 6
Men's M2 Side
"The mighty 2nds have continued with their match winning streak. Central were one of the top 4 sides on the log, so the 4-1 victory is another good one for the team. Cameron did the damage early on, netting from a short corner, to put the brown machine onto the front foot. Mirko managed to assist Cameron with a second goal (which gets credited to Mirko given the touch), to move us further ahead. We played some great hockey, throwing the ball around and using the width of the filed. Jacques Grobler controlled midfield, with Cameron, Martin and Jannie supporting him well in the mid-field. Tim smashed one past the keeper and Central reciprocated by roofing one, to take us into the break at 3-1. Central came hard at us in the 2nd half, showing some fine skills. We managed to hold that challenge off and even went further ahead after Tim pulled a rebound onto his reverse side and again slammed it past the keeper (with Tim's 1st goal fresh in his mind, Mirko chose to dive out the goals as Tim wound up). Tim's 2 goals and strong midfield play secured him the coveted man-of-the-match title. Andy picked up the less coveted d..k-of-the-day award for an on-field impersonation of the Andysaurus-Rex, which was judged to be inappropriate for that setting. The result secured us a bonus point, which should move the 2's to top spot on the log with our next, unbeaten, challenger a point below.
Mirko is still top goal scorer with 8 after only 4 games, followed by Cameron and Shayne on 4 each. Pickers is still hanging in there with his 3 goals, but in danger of being caught by his protégé Tim who is now on 2 goals."
Week 5
LADIES 1st TEAM : 30 April (week 4) and 7 May
The first team ladies played against Constantiaberg on Monday 2 May, welcoming back Mariette Rix from her national training commitments in Bloemfontein. The first goal for Somerset West came early in the game but with the opposition equalizing soon after. Half time saw Somerset West 2-1 up. Better hockey in the second half saw another 5 goals being slotted. Well done on a 7-1 victory : Yolani Fourie(1), Robyn McLaren (1), Ainsleigh de Kock (2) and Taryn Rose-Innes (3).
The game against Pinelands on the 8th May saw a depleted squad due to sickness and injuries with the girls having to run hard. Dominating most of the time, the game was unfortunately a 0-0 draw due to lack of goal-scoring opportunities.
LADIES 3RD TEAM
A disappointing 1-2 loss to UCT A. With no sub’s and up against a squad of 16 young players whose team consisted of 11 field players, it was difficult for the team to penetrate into the D and get any real momentum, although never giving up. Seemingly not getting any 50/50 blows led to frustration which was summed up by the team not leveling the score at the full time whistle with a successful shortie being disallowed.
MENS TC REPORT
On Friday 13 May the SWHC Mens TC side drew 2-2 against a strong and determined Maties 3rd team. The first half belonged to Sommies as the boys in brown played good structured hockey. Mat Tanner converted a penalty corner into a goal with a well directed drag flick (top corner). This was followed up with a piece of sublime skill by Eric Rose-Innes who bounced the ball over two defender’s sticks to calmly slot the ball in to the top left corner of the goal. Maties came back strongly in the second half and slotted two answered goals. A draw was a fair reflection of the game
.
On Sunday 15 May the Mens TC side played against WPCC. Although Somerset West dominated the entire game and ran out worthy 5-1 winners; the half time score was only one-nil as the WPCC goalkeeper frustrated the Somerset West strikers with some good saves. After an uncharacteristic mistake by the SWHC number 1 goalkeeper, which resulted in a short corner being awarded, WPCC equalised in the second half. This seemed to fire up Sommies who responded by scoring another 4 goals. Goal scorers for Somerset West were Grant Hawkings (2), Flo Kleinert (1), Mark Kokoropo (1) and Mike Oosthuizen (1).
MEN’S 2nd TEAM
Another great win for the mens 2nds, beating Pinelands B by 5-1. Again the side threw the ball around, using the width of the field and our pace up front to keep Pinelands chasing. We spent a lot of time in the Pinelands half, with them sending up a high lying forward, hoping for the break-away. Mirko took his season tally of goals to 7, after only 3 games, scoring another 2 this week. Shayne Buchanan also picked up 2 goals, again showing how many goals are waiting at the post. Cameron was his normal troublesome self, running hard at the opposition in the front, back, middle and everywhere in-between. The opposition admitted the guy with the "big hair" keep them busy. Q Du Toit, Jannie De Waal and Stevo Grobler had the midfield sewn up so that the opposition were always going to battle. Man-of-the-match, Dylan Breytenbach had a great run in his first outing at half. He was solid in defence and got the ball moving well in attack. Murray got the coveted d..k-of-the-day award with a strong warm-up, followed by some snappy dressing with the bright orange head-band - but then decided that it was all a bit much and so used the hammie trick to withdraw before the start. Great outing and again great spirit in the team, fortunately also with some very good hockey.
Week 3 (20 April 2011)
LGC
The 1st team ladies welcome a number of new players to the team this year: Karmen Nash, Robyn McLaren, Yolani Fourie, Michelle Lambrechts, Ainsleigh de Kock and Savannah Burns. We played UCT "B" on their turf and started strong, with Ainsleigh de Kock scoring within the first few minutes of the game. Michelle Lambrechts followed suit with a reverse-stick tap-in. Karmen Nash slotted in the next two, giving us a 4-0 lead at half-time. We continued to create opportunities in the second half and Karmen Nash scored another two great goals. Congrats on a comfortable 6-0 victory, ladies.
Week 2 (16 April 2011)
MEN’S TC SIDE
The SWHC 1st Mens team playing in their 5th season in the Town Challenge league had an indifferent start to their season. In their first match against Maties 4th team the boys hit the road running scoring their opening goal in the 1st minute by Flo Kleinert! However, Maties snapped back with two unanswered goals and the team went into the break 2-1 down. Within seconds - 33 seconds to be precise Grant Hawkins (captain) equalised to set up a thrilling second half. Although the team fought hard they were unable to breach the Maties’ defensive wall. Their second match before the Easter break was against Mutual CPUT on Friday 15 April in the howling south eater at Mutual Park. The team played good passing hockey and scored 5 goals without reply. Goals scorers were Matthew Gotley (3 goals); Mark Kokoropo and Michael Oosthuizen.
M2
The men's 2nd side had a tough but satisfying win over Fish Hoek on Saturday. The game was very even, with Sommies going 1-up before half time through a Shayne Buchanan field goal ("no it does not need to reach the backboard to count"). Fish Hoek drew level with a field goal after a breakaway. The Sommies boys kept at it for the full 70 minutes plus a bit, eventually getting the winner from a shorty after the final whistle. Denton Joachim had nerves of steel and managed to slot home from an unplanned variation shortie. Corrers made his season debut, adding some flair in the midfield alongside the solid Quentin Du Toit. Man-of-the-match Jannie De Waal had a great run at link, making a menace of himself with his attacking runs. It was decided not to award a di*k-of-the-day after such a good effort. The 2 youngsters, Tim Welsh and Martin Schouten played some great hockey to contribute to the victory.

The Mens 2nd team had a great start to the season against an understrength Pinelands side, winning 12-1. Man-of-the-match Cameron Corney was all over the field. Mirko was unlucky not to get the award after scoring 5 goals, possibly due to his "d-of-the-day" miss of an open goal. Pickers was also in early goal scoring form, picking up 3 goals. Quentin, the team captain, and Jacques Grobelaar (Steve to most) were solid in the midfield and each ended up with a goal for their efforts. Steve deserves a special mention, after pulling someone off the field "as he wanted to score a goal" - after 30 seconds he had!! All round a good effort for the first time we had run as a full team.
LGC
The girls played Van Der Stel in crazy mid-day heat. Unfortunately we had a bad penalty flick decision go against us very early on and were forced to play some catch up hockey. The final score was 4-2 down. Ainsleigh scored both our goals and Lottie was named player of the match.
L3B
After being 2/0 up at half time, lapse in concentration and lack of fitness contributed to a loss of 2/3 against Milnerton.
